deathnography

So, after being called out by my teacher Doug on his blog, I figured it was time to do a little post about my senior seminar project, which I entitled "Deathnography".

I chose to investigate what happens to a body after death, observing the process in a variety of places including hospitals, funeral homes, and cemeteries. I illustrated, designed, and wrote this book.

I have learned a lot about myself, both spiritually and as an artist. I enjoy the act of reporting and exploring a subject through drawing and writing. I also learned that in a way, this experience has humbled me. As a young adult growing up in our modern world, I am so used to seeing imagery of death and gore in the media. Now, after being through this experience of seeing the process on both the technical and traditional levels, it’s almost like I have a new feeling of respect… for death and for life.

This book is just a catalyst and the beginning of what I think is a very interesting conversation. I’m sure I’ll continue to struggle with these concepts, and of course I can’t wait to keep learning more about this subject matter.

You won't really see the quality of the illustrations, but these spreads will definitely give the feel of the book and design of the completed project:

hope you enjoyed!!
